John Barwick 1792 -1858 married Charlotte Rogers 1806 -1893

John Barwick was born in 1792 in Suffolk, England.  After being tried for breaking and entering in 1808, John was given a life sentence and transported to Sydney in 1810 on the "Ann II." 

In July 1814 muster, John is listed as being part of a road gang in the Hawkesbury area. This was just after he was sentenced to 300 lashes and a year in irons for being part of a group of seven men who absconded from the Windsor settlement. For three weeks they attempted to cross the Blue Mountains, then out of food they headed south towards Emu Plains where they were arrested.

He was granted a conditional pardon in 1816. John worked land around Kurrajong as a farmer. He married Charlotte Rogers June 5 1848 at Kurrajong, after the birth of their 13th child!

In August 1856 John was sentenced to three years jail for stealing a mare and died in Guildford in 1858. He was buried at St Peters in Richmond (see photo). There is a headstone for him, Charlotte, their daughter Mary and their son George. Originally John was used the surname Berwick, but it appears to be known as Barwick by subsequent generations. Charlotte lived to be 87 and died at her daughter's home ''Cedar Grove'' in Kurrajong in July 1893.
