Thomas Cowling 1765-1835 married Eleanor Bryan and Elizabeth Buller

Thomas Cowling was born in North Yorkshire, England in 1765. He died in Kurrajong in 1835.  In 1791 Thomas was arrested for stealing leather goods and subsequently was sentenced to seven years transportation. He arrived in Sydney on the "Pitt" in February 1792.

Thomas married Eleanor Bryan (1763 - 1806) who arrived from Ireland on the Sugar Cane in 1793.  They had two daughters - Jane, born January 8, 1795 and Sarah, born June 20, 1796. I am yet to confirm a son who died in Kurrajong in the 1820s. By 1800 the family had moved to the Hawkesbury, where Thomas was listed as living at Mulgrave Place near Windsor. He held ten cleared acres with six growing wheat and three with maize.

Unfortunately Eleanor drowned in the March 1806 Hawkesbury River floods. South Creek runs through Mulgrave and in turn flows into the Hawkesbury River. Eleanor may have drowned in South Creek. An account of the August 1806 floods can be read in this article. An article about early floods of the Hawkesbury briefly mentions that five people died in the March 1806 flood but does not name them.  Thomas and Eleanor's daughters married Hawkesbury convicts. Jane married David Hawkins in 1810 while Sarah married Edward Allen in 1814.

Thomas appeared to move around the Hawkesbury Nepean areas, owning or leasing land. Thomas is mentioned selling his wheat and maize harvest in 1811 and again in 1812.  An advertisement from May 1812 says he owns ten acres of land near the farm of John Lees in Castlereagh near Penrith.

After Eleanor's death Thomas partnered with Elizabeth Buller and they had a son, Cuthbert born in December 1813 at Castlereagh.

In 1819 Thomas applied for a land grant, which he received in 1822. This consisted of 40 acres at Myrtle Creek, Tahmoor. Thomas's son in law Edward Allen was granted 50 acres next door. Thomas appears to have lived at Myrtle Creek for a number of years before coming into conflict with a fellow Tahmoor resident. Thomas owed this person money and was unable to pay it. He was sent to prison for a year and his property was later sold.

After leaving prison, Thomas went to live at Kurrajong. He lived with either his daughter Jane and her husband David Hawkins at their property Timberinga or with his son Cuthbert at his guesthouse in Kurrajong Heights. Thomas died in September 1835 and it is believed he is buried in St Peter's Richmond.

A note about Cuthbert. Cuthbert married Sarah Douglass in 1850. They are mentioned in this 1910 article.  Cuthbert and Sarah had six children. In 1862 Cuthbert and Sarah partied ways and he placed an advertisement to not give her credit in his name. Cuthbert and Sarah ran a guesthouse in Kurrajong Heights. After Sarah left Cuthbert, a legal stoush over the Heights property ensued for years. Sarah later went on to live with Job Wilson.
